e-Shram is a portal introduced by the Ministry of Labor and Employment of India on August 21 2021 with the objective of promoting the well-being of labour workers in the unorganized sector. Unorganized labour workers encompass individuals who engage in work from home, are self-employed, or are wage earners in the unorganized sector. They are not affiliated with ESIC (Employees' State Insurance Corporation) or EPFO (Employees' Provident Fund Organization). The launch of the e-Shram portal aims to collect comprehensive data and statistics concerning labour workers in the unorganized sector. The gathered information will be beneficial in formulating strategies, policies, and employment opportunities for unorganized sector workers and laborers. Individuals who register for e-Shram will receive a card containing a unique identification number of 12 numbers (UAN) similar to the AADHAAR card number, assigned by the Ministry of Labor and Employment. The worker can also download, update, cancel and check payment status of their e-Shram labour card likewise.

e-Shram labour card eligibility criteria requirements, who can apply?

  • Any labour worker who is a home-based worker, self-employed worker or a wage worker working in an unorganized sector is eligible.
  • Labour worker must be aged between 16-59 years old. (note: labour worker can register if 16 years old and will continue to get benefits under e-Shram project even after 60 years of age).
  • Labour worker should not be a member of ESIC or EPFO to be eligible for e-Shram registration.
  • Only farmers like agriculture labourers and landless farmers are eligible for registration in the e-Shram portal. Other farmers are not eligible.
  • There is no income criteria for registering on e-Shram portal as an unorganized labour worker. However, the person should not be an income tax payee.
  • Labour workers should have an active mobile number linked with their AADHAAR card.
